Going the extra mile(s)

Cal State Gleaners

by Chico News & Review 9/03/22

Richard Mosell had barely escaped the Camp Fire when he resumed serving his neighbors. For five years, he'd volunteered with the Paradise Gleaners, and organization that distributed donated food to seniors and others in need. ( A college student in his 50's, Mosell was a beneficiary as well.) Days after the fire, he borrowed a pickup truck to bring bread and produce to refugees camped out in the Chico Walmart parking lot.

During one such delivery, he reunited with JoAnne Bond, the Gleaners' president. She asked Mosell, "You want this?"~ meaning, leadership of the group~"You want to do this?" He replied, "well, sure. I'll do that. I was going to do something; it might as well be this."

Partners with Torres Shelter ~ Freedom House and local Churches

Richard Mosell has worked hard to keep the Gleaners going since he took over the position of CEO, after the 2018 Camp Fire. His long and hard efforts are beginning to pay off as more and more folks are beginning to feel the relief in the community.

Recently Richard Mosell partnered up with the Torres Shelter in Chico. The Torres Community Shelter exists to provide transformational, life-saving services to people experiencing homelessness in our Butte County community. By becoming a partner, Richard was able to provide 40 new beds, food and essentials to help those in need. With Richards generous heart for giving and the shelters diligent efforts to make an impact in the homeless community, things are continuing to look up!
